At Lenora Braynon Smith Elementary School, our teachers instruct using the Florida Sunshine State Standards and Competency Based Curriculum (CBC). Mathematics and science are integrated in order to promote student understanding of the relationship of these subjects, their importance in our daily lives, and their effect on our future. Mathematics is taught in an hour block period. Critical thinking and problem solving strategies are used to explore and discover the world of math and science. Students are asked to come up with solutions and make connections to real-world problems. Our curriculum is based on hands-on, activity based, experiential learning. Students benefit from this curriculum because it allows those of different learning modalities to achieve success in a variety of ways. The curriculum also gives teachers additional opportunities to utilize alternative assessments - those which more accurately portray the competency and understanding of our students.
